What is right?

What is right? As long as something does not hurt someone is it right? Which moral codes are valid, which are simply brainchilds of a fanatical mind? What i value most in a human being is his or her respect for himself and his/her honor for others....Beliefs and practices come in second. Some of the best people i have known, some of my closest friends drink like fish, party like crazy and a lot of wrong things. Yet they are people i can count on when times get rough. A lot of 'respectable' people are the kinds who spend their entire lives in the pursuit of fame, wealth and status. People who could appear sensitive but are so cold-blooded that it scares me. Who is right? How can one judge a person to be good or bad - is it because he/she does not smoke/drink/socialize? Is it because he/she is outgoing and daring? I have had plenty of friends of both kinds who are flawed but wonderfully caring people, and i have plenty of those who live like moths, chasing the flame that consumes them. I get confused at times.

I would say it is more of a feeling level. We cannot really say its right or its wrong. Depends on situation! So instead of trying to judge something is wrong. we should go by the moment.

@Aps: i think you make a good point about judging others, but i speak about judging oneself

I go through the same. My take is: People around you make an impact on you. So, till you are centered and not really affected by the 'ill' in them, you can really help them get your point one day and of course, share the same relationship.

I don't know how much right I am..

@Bhanuja: yep, staying centered is most important in a mixec company. Yet, company definitely influences our behavior in some way

Good/Bad is a tough call...but one can should want only good for oneself and others....that would cause one to keep the right sangha and also try one's level best to help one's friends drop what is not uplifting for them - not too hard for a AOL teacher eh :-) ? After all we are not into passive acceptance.

@RR: agreed as AOL teachers it is easier, yet being a good AOL teacher is as much about being a well-experienced good human being. Hence often, one needs to experiment with completely new ideas and beliefs. The core values remain trust, love and friendship, yet the surface changes

Yes Abhishek, our minds are so much trained to make concepts/judgements that suddenly if its not able to form a concept/judgement; it gets scary. The mind does not know what to do! I hav also experienced this in the past that suddenly I am not able to form any judgement about anybody and it leaves a very 'void' feeling but does not last long :-)). Again i believe we are very lucky to even feel this 'dvandwa' inside us. Going through this will take us beyond right/wrong, good/bad etc.
